When to enroll in Medicare?

If you are turning 65, are a legal resident of the United States, have lived in the United States for at least 5 consecutive years, and have worked for at least 10 years, then you are entitled to Medicare and all of its benefits.

Failure to take action within the appropriate enrollment months may cause you to lose benefits such as prescription drug and doctor coverage.

Initial Enrollment Period

This enrollment period is for those who are eligible to apply for Medicare for the first time, when they are about to turn 65. It consists of 3 stages in which you can enroll in Medicare

Your coverage begins automatically on the date you enroll.

General Enrollment Period

This period is for those who were eligible to apply for Medicare for the first time but did not enroll in the initial enrollment period. You will have the opportunity to enroll from January through March of any year, but your coverage will not be effective until July 1 of the year in which you enroll.

Supplemental Plan Enrollment Period

This enrollment period is to supplement your original Medicare Part A and Part B coverage. You have a 6-month window, which begins to run from the date you turn age 65 and should already be enrolled in your Medicare Part B.

Annual Enrollment Period

This period will allow you to make changes to your Medicare coverage or plan, as you are entitled to make any changes to your plan each year. This period is open from October 15 through December 07, any changes you have made will be valid until January 1 of the following year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

This period is for people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and wish to switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or to Original Medicare, this election will be for one time only. This period is open every year from January 1st to March 31st.

Coverage will be valid for the month following the month in which the change was made.

Special Enrollment Period

This period is for people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and want to switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or to Original Medicare, this is a one-time election. This period is open every year from January 1 through March 31.

Coverage will be valid for the month following the month in which the change was made.
